SCE + SPORTS

The new home for the Stedelijk College Eindhoven (SCE) is meant to function as the new epicenter of Eindhoven Noord: a radiant and engaging multipurpose landmark. The limitations of the footprint of the lot are resolved by building multi-storey and compact, creating a spacious and clear square along the Oude Bossche Baan.
The school and the adjacent water are positioned in such a way that the grounds are unobstructed but easily closed up when necessary. The building is optimally visible from every angle of the schoolyard, and the transparent facade-elements make the goings-on of the school visible from every angle of neighborhood. Purposeful areas such as the theatre, the restaurant, the technical faculties and the economics classrooms, are all translucent or transparent and recognizable from the outside. The whole building is accessible and recognizable and does not emanate “school” but is clearly more of a showcase for the simulations, situations, and practical laboratories. The sports facilities create the possibility for access in the evenings and during the weekends. The marked sports entrance on the west side of the building also establishes sightlines and makes a strong connection to the central hall.
