Bridges Harnaschpolder

Our design for the 27 bridges and 12 diver-bridges in the Harnaschpolder is based on simple, robust architecture; no excessive or fragmented imagery, just concept clarity. The bridges emanate soundness and honesty and are based on the existing Westland bridges. Refinement comes forth in rails and the detailing. The bridge is not only anchored in the landscape, but also in the history of its environment and a recognizable family of bridge-designs.

The guard rails are all provided with a floating ‘beam’ connected to a series of strip-steel banisters. The application of these beams is subtly different on every bridge or frame construction and refers to the specific location of the bridge in question or the route to which it belongs. The steel railing is designed by visual artist Mariska van den Enden. The artist’s drawings are lasercut into a steel plate. The concrete and wooden railings are provided with text by linguistic artist Margriet van Bebber.
