Catharina bridge

The Aalmarkt area in the centre of Leiden is about to be radically transformed. The urban plan by Rijnboutt will see the shopping precinct expanded with a new street where the demolition of the Van Nelle building in 1976 left a gaping hole. Included will be larger commercial units, some of which will find accommodation in historic buildings. DP6 is responsible for the design of the new 6-metre span Catharina Bridge. The bridge and the new street will connect the Haarlemmerstraat to the Breestraat.

The bridge features a slender design with a slight S shape supported by two piers rising from the water. The positioning of the supports together with the curving bridge surface create a smooth shape that will ensure the free flow of traffic both by road and by water.
