Lorentz Lyceum

Finding your place in the world demands developing important characteristics: knowing yourself, bridging differences and discovering the world. That is why the Lorentz Lyceum prioritizes the core values of authenticity, diversity and innovation.

This school for all levels of secondary education will soon occupy a remarkable site beside Arnhem-Zuid station and Metamorfosenallee. The building is designed to provide space for the square and sun, thereby ensuring agreeable outdoor spaces. Gyms are incorporated into the building volume and are elevated onto the first floor to avoid blank facades at ground level. The building also reveals to the surrounding world what’s going on inside the school. Learning spaces are located all around the edge so that the building looks lively from all angles. The assembly hall extends from inside to outside and offers views right into the heart of the school.

In our vision, the lay-out and circulation inside the school are a translation of the development of pupils, because making education visible stimulates them. The Science, Humanities and Opus areas offer space for focus and collaboration, and the atrium connects the areas for cross-curricular activities. No matter where you are in the building, you are connected to one another and to the world. This sense of ‘connectivity’ is expressed throughout the school in light, spaciousness, views and graphic prints on the walls.
