St. Nicolaaslyceum Interior

A unique school in a unique location, the St. Nicolaaslyceum is a school with high ambitions and a clear social focus, and is firmly rooted in its three spearheads: sports, culture and science.

The brief called for a high level of spatial effect: “The building’s atmosphere and design should encourage and stimulate pupils to develop an inquiring mind as they learn”. A dialogue with the client and the building’s users ensured that these requirements were met by the design.

In the design concept for the restaurant, the staff room and the multimedia centre, the school’s main requirement has been solved in terms of shapes and colours, and the tangibility of materials, daylight, sight lines and spatial effects. The restaurant features a number of different areas, each with its own atmosphere. Benches on wheels can be used to vary the layout and adapt the space for different uses, including theatre performances and lounging.
